New dishes on the menu this winter?
Posted 10/02/10

Facing one of the coldest winters in nearly thirty years, we find ourselves searching for culinary inspiration in the form of classic, traditional, heartwarming bistro dishes that have stood the test of time. Some winter warmers that are sure to prove popular over the coming months include a beef, porter and wild mushroom pie, slow roast pork belly with smoked hogs pudding and bubble & squeak, a succulent loin of venison with chateau potatoes, award winning calves liver & bacon from Jon & Vicky Brown at Bocaddon Farm, and a delicious bowl of steaming fish chowder served at lunchtimes. Of course the puddings have been given the royal winter treatment too with the inclusion of some classic hearty favourites like sticky toffee pudding, apple crumble, a chocolate torte that thinks it’s a black forest gateaux and a delicious custard tart!

StreetSmart – £3000 raised for Helping the Homeless Campaign
Posted 10/02/10

During November & December of last year Bustophers raised a fantastic £3000 for the StreetSmart charity. The projects funded are all aimed at getting people off the streets, and onto their feet again - with St Petroc’s Society the nominated local charity for this area. They support single homeless people who may suffer from drug or alcohol dependencies, ill mental health, relationship problems or an offending lifestyle, which may contribute to their homelessness and social exclusion. Many thanks to all our customers who helped contribute to this worthy festive cause over Christmas!

Bustophers going for Gold in regional competition!
Posted 10/12/09

Following on from last year’s silver at the Taste of the West Awards, this year we have claimed top honours in the restaurant category! Along with receiving our AA rosette for a second year in a row, this is absolutely fantastic news for the Bustophers team – a recognition of not only great quality seasonal food, but a consistently high standard being achieved throughout the year! We now have to wait until December for the overall regional winners to be announced, where gold medal winners from Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Gloucestershire & Wiltshire will be pitted against one another at a glittering awards ceremony. Fingers crossed!!!

Team Bustophers - field trips to Épernay
Posted 10/12/09

General Manager Tom & his wife Vicky were very fortunate to be invited by Bollinger to visit their world famous winery in Ay, Champagne. The trip included a fascinating tour of its vast cellars and charming Vieilles Vignes Françaises vineyards, a fabulous lunch hosted by the director of sales & marketing Stephén LeRoux ( with a tasting or two of recent vintages of course), and a truly detailed account of the sparkling wine making process. Let’s just hope that Tom paid attention and was making notes in preparation for his forthcoming champagne exam in November! Also on the trip we visited Bollinger’s neighboring property and recently acquired fellow grande marque Ayala - which according to sources was the late Queen Mother’s favourite champagne! We were given a fascinating tour of their vast cellars carved deep into the all-important chalk landscape, witnessed the high tech modern equipment busy working its way through thousands of orders, and tried to avoid the odd spider or two clinging to the cellar walls!

Team Bustophers - field trips to Angus Trotters
Posted 10/12/09

Our head chef Rob, along with Shane and Tom also recently visited Angus Trotters Butchers over in Radnor for the morning (we can’t have glamorous field trips every week you know!). A really informative visit, and not for the faint hearted, we were shown pure breed Aberdeen Angus bulls (just over the road!), their own smoking facilities for cured bacon, highly effective & very fast butchery techniques, but most importantly of all we had a thoroughly entertaining morning with the lads down there and will be back with more Bustophers recruits in the near future!

Britain’s oldest wine merchant proudly supplies Bustophers
Posted 10/12/09

Berry Bros & Rudd

Established in 1698, Berry Bros. & Rudd is Britain's oldest wine merchant. It has traded from the same shop at 3 St James’s Street, London for over three hundred years and even today members of the Berry and Rudd families continue to own and manage the family-run wine merchant. The company evolved from selling provisions, exotic spices, tea and coffee to, ultimately, fine wines and scotch whisky. Berrys first supplied wine to the British royal family during the reign of King George III and has continued to do so until this present day. This year’s International Wine Challenge saw Berrys’ scooping the most coveted title of Wine Merchant of the Year – seeing off contenders including Marks & Spencer and Majestic.

The company also boasts the expertise of five Masters of Wine – a privileged position as only 278 Masters of Wine exist worldwide. This now means along with Xenia Irwin MW from Walter Hicks Wine Merchants and David Round MW from H&H Bancroft Wines, Bustophers can call upon the services of a plethora of fully qualified global ambassadors to the wine trade!

StreetSmart – Helping the Homeless Campaign
Posted 10/12/09

Every year during November & December StreetSmart raises thousands for homeless charities in cities across the country. Last year they raised the incredible sum of £435,000, and since being established in 1998, they have risen over £3,700,000.

Restaurants like Bustophers are the main channel for the StreetSmart campaign, but you, the customer are the real contributor. At the end of your meal, a voluntary charge of £1 per table is added to the bill. Dinner for four would amount to each person contributing 25p. You of course, can choose not to participate, simply by telling the staff who can easily remove it from the bill. It’s a simple way to help the homeless in your local city get back to being a vital, contributing member of society.

Summer is finally upon us!
Posted 29/06/09

Summer is finally upon us and we now have a new lighter summertime menu available for both lunch and dinner. We still have our classic Bustophers dishes available like Pork Belly and Mussels – but have introduced some potential new classics to the fore, with a fabulous Chicken & Chardonnay Pie, Fillet Steak with hand cut chunky chips & a béarnaise sauce plus a wonderful new lamb dish with a broad bean, pea & new potato medley. The bar is now offering three delicious sparkling wines by the glass, with Camel Valley, Bollinger and Veuve Clicquot Rose all available! We are also excited to be sourcing some fantastic Spanish produce direct from Borough Market in London, featuring gigantic Gordal olives, some great chorizo paired with a delicious chilled glass of Fino Manzanilla sherry!!

Taste of the west award
Posted 01/12/08

We are absolutely delighted to win the silver runner up award in the restaurant class for this year’s annual Taste of the West awards for the Cornwall region. Beaten to the gold award by the team at Fifteen Cornwall and the chance to win the overall regional award for the South West, this accolade is a wonderful reflection of our commitment to local sourcing and provenance, but also of our ability to run a smooth but at times frantic operation! This followed on from also picking up our first ever AA Rosette for culinary excellence earlier in what proved to be a truly remarkable month for us all at Bustophers!

AA Rosette Award
Posted 01/12/08

In October earlier this year we were awarded an AA Rosette for culinary excellence. This is of course a wonderful achievement, completely out of the blue, and something which stands us out as a consistently committed quality food led hospitality venue.
